Experience Lent: Day 20 – Kingdom Come

Experience Lent: Day 20 – Pray the Lord's Prayer five times throughout the day.

I thought maybe I'd offer a parallel text from a few different sources, some directly from biblical translations others partially paraphrased, to allow you the opportunity to compare and possibly see this very familiar, liturgical reading in a different light. I have stripped the reference numbers so it reads more like a conversation.

What things do you notice about these different phrasings?

  • Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
  • Our Father in heaven, reveal who you are. Set the world right; do what's best – as above, so below. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil. You're in charge! You can do anything you want! You're ablaze in beauty! Yes. Yes. Yes!
  • Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

As you pray today, dig in to discover the heart of this prayer.
